Sheet glass of various colors can be cut into small pieces and fused around a piece of fiber paper to make cabochons with channels. These channeled cabs can be strung with beads to make gorgeous fused glass bracelets. To the left you will see Various bracelets made using the techniques below and assorted glass.
To form the exotic "Jungle Bracelet" above, follow the instructions below. Step 1. Cut a strip of glass 7/8" thick. In this image you see the use of a pistol grip cutting tool, a mini grid Morton Board and a Morton Glass Shop to cut the large sheet of glass into a 7/8" strip.
Step 2. Cut the strip into a 7/8" x 7/8" square.
Step 3. Cut two 1/3" wide pieces from the strip to be used as the bridge pieces. The bridge pieces will be 7/8 inch long by 1/3" wide. Step 4. In the same manor, cut a 7/8" x 7/8" square from the streaky brown/black glass as a matching decorative cap. Step5 . Cut or break the design elements of black noodles and gold dichroic glass into desirable pieces. The noodle can be simply broken or scored first and broken. It is advisable to score the dichroic glass before breaking.
Step 6. Apply a tiny dot of Elmer's glue to the back of the design elements and adhere them in to the brown/black decorative cap. The selection and arrangement of the design elements is left to the artist. Each bracelet will be personalized in this way.
Step 7. Apply a tiny dot of glue to the bridge pieces and adhere them to the base piece of glass aligned directly over each end of the base piece leaving a gap between the bridge pieces. Cut a piece of fiber paper 1/4" wide by 1" long and place between the bridge pieces on the base piece of glass.
Step 8. Apply a tiny dot of glass to the top of the bridge pieces and adhere the decorative cap directly over the base, fiber paper and onto the bridge pieces. To form a bracelet, construct 6 to 7 pieces similar to this piece.
Step 9. Allow the glue to dry and place the glass pieces with the fiber paper onto a piece of thin shelf paper in a kiln. Fire the kiln at a rate of 500 degrees F per hour to 1480 degrees F. Hold at 1480 degrees F until the desired degree of fusing has occurred. If the pieces are allowed to fuse for a long period of time, the cabochons will take on a slight figure eight shape. If a square cabochon is desired, stop the fusing process by evacuating 200-300 degrees from the kiln (flash the kiln) just as the glass has fused together. Step 10. Allow the kiln to cool naturally and remove the cabs from the kiln. Discharge the fiber paper with a toothpick and water. Step 11. Use a stretchy cord or other desirable material to string the cabochons into a bracelet. Beads can be added in between the glass cabs. If using a stretchy cord, you must pull the cord tightly while tying in order to get the knot to hold. These
cabs were allowed to fuse for 15 minutes and have a slight hour glass figure.
Many times 6 cabochons will plenty to make a bracelet to fit most wrists. If 7 cabochons are made the 7th cab can be added to a cable necklace and worn as a compliment to the bracelet!
